Autumn Home Décor Ideas: How to Create a Cosy, Quirky Home

As soon as the evenings start getting darker and there’s a definite chill in the air, our homes naturally start to feel a little different.

Summer is all about light, airy spaces and throwing the doors open. Autumn is when we start wanting to make everything feel warmer, softer and a little more inviting.

But creating a cosy autumn home doesn’t have to mean covering every available surface in pumpkins, orange leaves and signs saying Hello Autumn.

At Skinny Pig Interiors, we prefer a slightly more individual approach.

Think rich colours, soft textures, warm lighting and a few quirky home accessories thrown in for good measure.

Here are some simple ways to make your home feel cosy for autumn without completely changing your decorating scheme.

Bring in Warmer Colours

One of the easiest ways to give your home an autumnal feel is through colour.

You don’t necessarily need to repaint your walls either.

Rust, forest green, mustard, burgundy, chocolate brown and deep plum all work beautifully at this time of year.

Try adding these shades through cushions, throws, rugs or decorative accessories.

If your home is already fairly neutral, even one strong accent colour can make the room feel instantly warmer.

And if you’re already a fan of bold colour, autumn is the perfect excuse to lean into those deeper, moodier tones.

Add Layers and Texture

Texture makes an enormous difference when you want a room to feel cosy.

A beautifully styled sofa in summer might only need a couple of cushions. Come autumn, adding a throw or sheepskin instantly makes it feel more inviting.

Natural textures work particularly well.

Think:

  • sheepskin rugs
  • chunky throws
  • velvet cushions
  • woven baskets
  • aged wood
  • ceramic accessories

The idea is to make the room feel layered rather than overly styled.

A sheepskin casually draped over a chair or sofa can completely change the feel of a room while still looking relaxed.

Swap Bright Lighting for a Softer Glow

Lighting becomes much more noticeable as the nights draw in.

Instead of relying solely on your main ceiling light, try using several smaller light sources around the room.

Table lamps, wall lights, candles and decorative lighting can create a much softer atmosphere.

Warm pools of light in different corners help a room feel cosy without making it dark.

This is also the perfect time of year to use candles more often.

Even when they’re not lit, interesting candle holders can add colour, height and personality to shelves and side tables.

Use Nature as Inspiration

Autumn decorating doesn’t have to be literal.

You don’t need artificial leaves and miniature pumpkins everywhere to give a room an autumn feel.

Instead, take inspiration from nature.

Branches, dried flowers, seed heads and textured foliage can all look beautiful displayed in unusual vases.

Deep green faux plants are also a great way to keep some life in a room when the garden outside is beginning to fade.

Paired with earthy colours and natural textures, they help create that cosy seasonal feeling without looking overly themed.

Make Your Shelves Feel More Autumnal

One of the easiest seasonal updates is simply restyling the things you already have.

Move accessories around.

Bring darker ornaments forward.

Add a candle.

Layer a small framed picture behind an object.

Place a quirky ornament amongst books and plants.

You’d be surprised how different a shelf can look simply by rearranging a few pieces.

This is also a good opportunity to rotate accessories.

Instead of displaying everything all year round, keeping some pieces back and bringing them out seasonally can make your home feel refreshed without buying lots of new things.

Embrace Animal Décor

Animal décor works particularly well in autumn.

There’s something about woodland-inspired and slightly eccentric animal pieces that naturally suits cosy interiors.

A deer or antelope wall head, a small cast iron bird or an unusual animal ornament can add interest without making your home feel overtly seasonal.

Against richer wall colours such as deep green, navy or burgundy, these pieces can look especially striking.

And because they’re not specifically “autumn decorations”, you can leave them up all year.

Don’t Forget the Hallway

Hallways often get overlooked when decorating for the seasons.

But autumn is when your entrance suddenly has to cope with coats, scarves, umbrellas and muddy shoes again.

A few well-placed hooks, a basket for accessories and a warm lamp can make the space feel much more welcoming.

Adding an interesting mirror or quirky wall decoration also helps turn a practical space into part of your decorating scheme.

Make the Bedroom Cosier

Autumn is also a lovely time to make your bedroom feel more luxurious.

Extra layers on the bed, warmer colours and softer lighting can make a huge difference.

Try adding a throw across the bottom of the bed or draping a sheepskin over a chair.

A small lamp on the bedside table creates a much nicer atmosphere than bright overhead lighting.

And if you like changing your décor seasonally, simply swapping a few accessories can make the room feel completely different.

Cosy Doesn’t Have to Mean Cluttered

There’s often a temptation in autumn to keep adding things.

More cushions.

More throws.

More candles.

More decorations.

But cosy doesn’t necessarily mean cluttered.

Sometimes a room feels warmer simply because of the colours, textures and lighting you’ve chosen.

A few carefully selected pieces can have far more impact than filling every surface.

Choose things you genuinely love and give them enough space to be noticed.

Create an Autumn Home That Still Feels Like You

Seasonal decorating should enhance your home rather than completely transform it.

If you love bold colours, keep them.

If you prefer darker interiors, embrace them.

And if your decorating style involves slightly strange animals, cheeky signs or wonderfully unnecessary objects, there’s absolutely no reason to put them away for autumn.

In fact, we’d argue that autumn is the perfect time to add even more personality.

Because once the doors are closed, the candles are lit and you’re settled in for the evening, your home should feel like somewhere you genuinely want to be.

And preferably somewhere with at least one slightly ridiculous ornament watching over proceedings.
