Small Details, Big Difference: The Finishing Touches That Make a Room Feel Complete
You’ve chosen the sofa, found the perfect paint colour and finally decided where the furniture should go. And yet somehow, the room still feels as though something is missing.
More often than not, it’s the finishing touches.
It’s the lamps, mirrors, plants, candles, pictures and slightly peculiar decorative objects that turn a nicely decorated room into a home that feels finished, interesting and personal.
The good news is that you don’t need to completely redecorate to make a difference. Sometimes the smallest additions have the biggest impact.
Start with the lighting
Lighting can completely change how a room feels.
Rather than relying on one main ceiling light, try introducing different sources of light around the room. Table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and candles create softer pools of light and make a space feel much warmer and more inviting.
Think about where your eye naturally travels too. A lamp on a sideboard doesn’t just provide light – it draws attention to everything around it, making a little collection of objects suddenly feel much more considered.
Give the walls some attention
Bare walls can make even a beautifully furnished room feel unfinished.
Artwork is the obvious answer, but it certainly isn’t the only one. Mirrors, decorative plaques and three-dimensional wall decorations can add shape, texture and interest.
And don’t feel that everything needs to be hung perfectly symmetrically.
A slightly unexpected piece on the wall can often give a room far more personality than something chosen simply because it fills the available space.

Add something living (or convincingly pretend)
Plants have an almost magical ability to make a room feel more inviting.
They soften hard edges, introduce colour and fill those awkward gaps where nothing else seems quite right. A trailing plant on a shelf or a taller plant in an empty corner can make an enormous difference.
And if keeping plants alive isn't your greatest talent, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a good faux one. No watering, no mysterious brown leaves and no returning from holiday to something resembling a twig.

Style the surfaces
Coffee tables, consoles, shelves and sideboards are where you can really start adding personality.
Rather than scattering lots of small objects around, try grouping a few pieces together. A stack of books topped with an interesting ornament, a candle beside a plant or a decorative tray containing a handful of favourite things can create a little focal point.
Varying the height of objects helps too. If everything is roughly the same size, it can look a little regimented. Mixing tall, short, round and sculptural pieces makes a display feel much more relaxed.

Don't underestimate a good mirror
Mirrors are incredibly useful finishing touches, particularly in smaller or darker rooms.
Placed opposite or near a window, they can bounce natural light around the room and make the space feel brighter. An interesting frame can also turn a mirror into a decorative feature in its own right.
And while a large mirror can make a statement, smaller decorative mirrors look brilliant mixed among pictures and wall decorations.
Introduce texture
If a room feels a little flat, it may simply need more texture.
Think woven baskets, soft cushions, throws, aged metal, natural wood, ceramics and glass. Combining different materials stops everything feeling too polished and gives a room depth.
This is particularly useful if you've chosen a fairly neutral colour scheme. You can keep the palette simple while still creating plenty of visual interest.
Add the thing that doesn't quite belong
This might be our favourite finishing touch of all.
Every room can benefit from something slightly unexpected.
A peculiar animal ornament. An oversized candle holder. An unusual piece of wall décor. Something vintage next to something modern. Something that makes a visitor stop and say, “Where did you get that?”
These pieces stop a room feeling overly styled and give it a sense of humour and individuality.
They don't have to make sense to anybody else. If you love them, they belong.
Who doesn't love retro and kitsch.
Don't try to finish everything at once
The temptation when decorating is to get the room done. But some of the best finishing touches are the things you find gradually.
Live with the room for a while. Notice the empty corners and the shelves that need something. Pick things up on holidays, browse vintage shops and choose new pieces when something genuinely catches your eye.
Your home will feel much more personal if it grows with you rather than being completed in a weekend.
Ultimately, finishing touches aren't really about finishing a room at all.
They're about adding the layers that make it feel like yours – the beautiful things, useful things, sentimental things and wonderfully unnecessary things that make you happy every time you walk past them.
